The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, has ruled out the introduction of a tax for elections, saying Ghanaians are already “over-taxed”.
The government of Ghana, together with foreign donor partners, funds the work of the election management body.
Mrs Mensa, who addressed a gathering at the West Africa Media Excellence Awards 2019 Conference held in Accra on Friday, 18 October 2019, said an election tax will not be accepted by Ghanaians.
“I do not think that the imposition of an election tax will be something that the people of Ghana will take lightly because we are already over-taxed,” she stated.
She said prudent management of the resources currently available to the EC will ensure its smooth operations and successful conduct of elections.
The EC is currently preparing for district assembly elections which will be held before the end of the year.
