Professor Kobby Mensah of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) has schooled Ghanaian journalists on the proper way to write the profile of academics in the press.
In his post on X, Prof. Kobby Mensah wrote:
“To the media houses, please take note because you have been making mistakes all the time even when we correct you. People are learning from the media yet you keep making these basic mistakes. The best way of writing the profile or the attribution of academics on TV, Radio or in the press. I will use myself as an example.
If a lecturer (L), which is the first stage of the ranks: Kobby Mensah – lecturer, University of Ghana Business School
If a Senior Lecturer (SL), which is the Second stage of the ranks: Kobby Mensah – Senior lecturer, University of Ghana Business School
If Associate Professor, which is the third stage of the ranks (Assoc. Prof): Kobby Mensah – Associate Professor, University of Ghana Business School. And this is where I am now.
If Professor, which is the final stage of the ranks (Prof.): Kobby Mensah – Professor, University of Ghana Business School.
NB: there are other two profiles, Assistant lecturer and Emeritus Professor. These two are not part of the “regular” ranks in most institutions. The first could be seen as “under training” when you haven’t achieved the requirements for “regularising” your appointment. The second is conferred on you by the institution when you have retired under a “distinguished” circumstances such as having a very high impact on the institution itself, or internationally/locally”.
