It has come to my notice about allegations and complains through a media publication made by DeInsider of some students who are being harassed sexually by some lecturers on campus. I strongly condemn this act and admonish any lecturer to desist from this act which has render some victims depressed and afraid to even come back to school when the semester begins. Lecturer threatening to harm a student unlawfully is criminal and must not be entertained. Under Section 74 of the Criminal Code on Threat of Harm states “Whoever threatens any other person with unlawful harm, with intent to put that person in fear of unlawful harm, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor” and it is punishable.
Sexual Harassment, this is defined as an unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature including unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favours and other verbal, non-verbal, written, electronic, graphic or physical conduct or behaviour of a sexual nature when submission to or rejection of such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment, academic standing or participation in an educational programme or activity; or submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for academic or employment decisions or for academic evaluations, grades or advancement affecting that individual. Such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s academic or work performance, or of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational or working environment. It is an offence under an act of the Criminal Code 1960 (Act 29).
I call on school Management and the SRC to launch an investigation into the said matter to fish out culprits who are involve in such an act to deter our female colleague students from having freedom on campus. The counts of the victims of this act according to the publication doesn’t speak well of the university community and we cannot sit aloof to get the school image being tarnished because of somebody’s uncontrollable libido.
I therefore call on TUTAG, KTU Chapter to investigate on this matter to bring peace and cordial relationship between a female student and a male lecturer. It will be a disaster academically if a female student can’t approach a male lecturer to express her frustrations in academics when there is a fear of being harassed sexually.
I am using this opportunity to call on all victims when approached by appropriate quarters, to be bold enough to help in investigations which at the end of the day it will help curtail this challenge being faced by some students. I also admonish students who are found dressed indecently to approach male lecturers to desist from that on campus. Know who you should get closer to and how to relate to because not anywhere you fit in is where you should be comfortable.
May God bless our university and make us great.
Thank You.
