The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) wishes to inform all members that there shall be a press conference scheduled on Monday, 5th March, 2018 at 9:00 am in Accra Technical University’s auditorium.
This move is to compel government to withdraw the Technical Universities (amendment) Bill, 2017 which intends to transfer the management of the Technical Universities to the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE).
There are numerous sections in the amendment Bill, 2017 which is totally against best practices and international standards and we ought to register our displeasure with these anomalies.
On 13th February, 2018 at a stake holder forum with the Committee of Education in Parliament, the conference of Vice Chancellors /Rectors of Technical Universities and Polytechnics, Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) and other workers unions in the Technical University fraternity made various inputs relating to the Technical Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and stressed on the need for government to grant the Technical Universities the autonomy to execute their mandate effectively.
That notwithstanding, there are still indications of government deliberate attempt to still go ahead with the intention of making the NCTE a pseudo council to run our Technical Universities.
The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) held a press conference last week to register their displeasure with the nature government intends to water down the functions of the governing councils of the Technical Universities.
As a union that always prioritize the interest of students, we deemed it fit to further add our effort in this course to attaining academic freedom.
Technical education deserves better!!
Ghana’s industrialization agenda can only be achieved through the Prioritization of Technical and vocational education through our Technical Universities. This goal cannot be achieved without granting these institutions the autonomy to operate effectively.
Let’s join the campaign and share this message to our various student platforms
……… Signed………..
