Distinguished Guests
Ladies and Gentlemen
It gives me great pleasure to warmly welcome you to the Closing Ceremony and the Award of Certificates for the 3rd Phlebotomy Training Course in Koforidua Technical University (KTU). This shows that the training has been successfully completed and I congratulate participants for the work well done.
We are especially honoured to welcome the Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr Anim Boamah to whom we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the major role he has played in the successful implementation of this programme at KTU. KTU is deeply committed to strengthening our ongoing partnership with the Eastern Regional Hospital to ensure the sustenance of the programme.
Mr. Chairman,
Over the last eight weeks, the University in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Hospital has delivered a programme that has further built participants’ knowledge in this specialized area of health. The graduating participants have been involved in an intensive immersion experience, covering cross-cutting topics and emerging issues of national importance in the health delivery system. The University and external specialists have engaged with participants during their training to foster and develop their expertise in areas as diverse as procedural matters and management.
By using a variety of experiential learning techniques, our experts specifically designed this comprehensive training to give trainees a wide range of opportunities to exchange knowledge with clients. The University teams worked closely together to deliver these tailored programmes to help them to gain a better understanding of the operation of phlebotomy. Trainees also had opportunities to engage with the Regional Hospital for practical experience.
SIGNIFICANCE OF PHLEBOTOMY
Mr. Chairman,
Phlebotomy training is a course designed to prepare students to work as Healthcare Technician Specialists. Phlebotomists are skilled health care professionals who have been trained to handle and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis using venipuncture and micro collection techniques.
Through a hands-on training approach, our instructors train students in these areas and upon completion of the course, the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate programme prepares graduates to work as Healthcare Technicians Specializing in phlebotomy. The primary job responsibilities for a certified phlebotomist involve drawing blood and preparing it for lab testing. The skills acquired from this programme is adequate to enable participants to successfully carry out this function.
EMPLOYMENT FOR PHLEBOTOMISTS
Mr. Chairman,
Employment opportunities for certified phlebotomy technicians can be found in Hospitals, Private Clinics, Pathology Laboratories, Physician Offices, Nursing Homes, Home Healthcare facilities and even Research Laboratories. The career outlook in the field of
Phlebotomy is very promising. The field is expanding quickly. and job growth is expected to grow considerably over the next decade.
Many healthcare workers also use phlebotomy us a stepping stone towards additional careers. It is not uncommon for experienced phlebotomists to obtain additional education and training to become Medical Assistants. Surgical Technicians or Cardiovascular Technologists.
However, they will need to have personal commitment and passion for the profession and be firm in their decisions in order to succeed in implementing what is expected of them.

To you our graduands, I extend the warmest congratulations of Management to you for successfully completing the training. I salute you for the patience, the perseverance and all the sacrifice that saw you through the eight weeks training. We are proud of you. You deserve whatever awards you are going to receive today.
You have been a vital part of a programme that will eventually train many of your peers and colleagues to improve health delivery. I, therefore, encourage you to inspire and motivate other participants who will join the training programme over the coming years. I am confident that you will be worthy ambassadors of KTU wherever you find yourselves.
