TUTAG Suspends The Sit-Down Strike For Now

Press Statement: By Technical University Teaching Association Of Ghana (Tutag) On 27^th September, 2018

The Technical University Teaching Association of Ghana declared a sit-down strike on Wednesday, 12^th September, 2018. The main reason was the failure of Government to migrate workers of our various Technical Universities onto the conditions of Service of Public University in Ghana.

TUTAG met with the minister of employment and labour relations on 20^th September, 2018. In attendance were the minister of state in charge of Tertiary Education, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the National Council for Tertiary Education.

At the said meeting, a communique was issued and some conditions were given, National Council for Tertiary Education have not met one of the conditions of providing TUTAG with the schedule and guidelines for the staff audit. But they have not provided TUTAG with the scheme of Service which is condition precedent for the staff audit.

TUTAG wishes to state

1. That there is no legal basis for not migrating TUTAG members onto the existing Conditions of Service of Public Universities.
2. That TUTAG expects to receive the scheme of service by 2^nd October, 2018, before the staff audit begins on 3^rd October 2018, as agreed at the ministry of Employment and labour Relations.
3. That TUTAG is concerned about the welfare of students, parents and the general public
4. That TUTAG is showing good faith as of now and expects same from Government in Our legitimate request for migration
5. That TUTAG shall not entertain any unnecessary delay to migrate its members onto the conditions of Service of public Universities in Ghana.

Also, TUTAG wishes to prompt Government to expedite actions on the conversation of Wa and Bolgatanga Polytechnies into Technical Universities in accordance with Act 922 as amended.

Therefore, TUTAG at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, 27 September 2018, has decided to consider Government’s appeal to suspend the sit-down strike for now and it remains so suspended.

TUTAG hopes that this show of good faith will not be abused.
