Citi FM and Citi TV’s Presidential Correspondent, Sammi Wiafe has been elected as the Dean of the Presidential Press Corps.
He becomes the leader of the thirty-three (33) journalists assigned to cover the President.
By this role, he is expected to coordinate media activities at the Jubilee House and ensure the President gets media coverage on his activities.
Sammi Wiafe said he was overwhelmed by the confidence his colleagues reposed in him and was full of gratitude to the Presidential Press Corps.
“I thank my colleagues for believing in me and electing me to be their chief servant. Leading journalists anywhere in the world can be interesting and tough but, fulfilling. And I am happy to be doing this right now,” he told Citi News.
“These are some of the best people in their various media houses assigned to discharge the critical responsibility of bringing to their employers and public, news from the Presidency. This means they are smart and not just that, they can also be very opinionated sometimes,” he said with laughter.
Sammi Wiafe’s rise to the role is not surprising as he has covered President Nana Akufo-Addo from his days as NPP Presidential Candidate from 2007 to 2016, before he was elected President.
He thinks reporting on the President’s activities is a “great learning experience and affords me the opportunity to better understand the goings-on in the ‘big house’ and government in general.”
Asked on what he hopes to bring to the role, Sammi Wiafe remarked that his first duty is to “make sure my colleague Presidential Affairs reporters are respected and do their job as bestowed on them by the Constitution without fear but in the most professional way possible.”
According to him, working to afford “colleagues access to key personalities at the presidency for the purposes of news reporting will be one of the things I think will be my focus. I need to properly coordinate schedules to ensure a win-win relationship for both the correspondents and the Jubilee House.”
He takes over from Daily Guide’s Charles Takyi-Boadu.
Sammi has close to 15 years’ experience in frontline media, reporting on politics and social issues.
He previously worked with Choice FM before berthing at Citi FM and Citi TV.
As a key member of the Citi FM/TV political and current affairs team, his views on news happenings in the country and beyond are actively sought and well-received by his colleagues and contemporaries.
He has also had a flowery stint with news production where he, among other things, led the respected Eyewitness News production team in the past to a number of prestigious industry awards.
Aside from the busy schedule he runs in keeping up with activities at the Presidency – and now having to coordinate undertakings of his colleague reporters at the Jubilee House – and ensuring that his media organization, Citi TV/FM gets ahead in the news when it comes to reporting on the Seat of Government, Sammi Wiafe is a prolific writer whose articles have kicked off conversations on many issues in our socio-politico-economic space.
He has a degree in Economics from the Central University.
Prior to this, he studied journalism and public relations at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
He is an alumnus of Achimota School and Bishop Herman College.
